Gladiolus flower sun or shade. Bleeding heart bleeding heart can be planted in spring through early summer. They do prefer full sun to light shade with soil that drains well. Plant gladiolus in a location that receives full sunlight. Once planted your gladiolus should grow well with little attention. Gladiolus grow and flower best in full sun. They are readily available at florist shops but why not grow these hardy plants in your own garden.
They will not do well in heavy soggy soil. These hardy bulbs are easy to grow and flower just about anywhere. Majestic in size and stature glads range from 2 to 5 feet 0 6 to 1 5 m tall and have trumpet shaped flowers in shades of all colors except blue. After loosening the soil mix in a 2 to 4 inch layer of compost or aged manure.
It needs very little maintenance other than consistent moisture making it a spring favorite. Gladiolus prefers a well drained loamy sandy soil. Plant the corms bulbs three to four inches deep about six inches apart. The spiky plant has bright blooms in shades of orange pink yellow and white that are all stunning.
There s also dream s end which is tall up to 3 feet and sports a lovely light orange flower with large yellow centers the black star with its deep purple red blooms and the glamini glads which i must get as they are supposed to be pest resistant and they will bloom well in full sun or partial shade. Add mulch to help retain water and to keep the weeds down. Gladioli will flower in partial shade locations but the blooms will not be as colorful or vibrant as they would be in full sun and the plant s growth could be stunted from inadequate light. While you can plant in full sun to part shade it does best with more sun.
While they prefer full sun gladiolus will still grow well in partial shade. A little fertilizer helps to stimulate growth especially if the soil is poor.
