Ready your garden by using a garden fork or tiller to loosen the soil to about 12 to 15 inches deep.
Gladiolus flower sun or shade. Gladioli like well drained soil that s moderately fertile. Majestic in size and stature glads range from 2 to 5 feet 0 6 to 1 5 m tall and have trumpet shaped flowers in shades of all colors except blue. Gladiolus like well drained sandy loam soil. Gladiolus corms will flower in part shade but the colors will not be as vivid as when planted in full sun and the plant won t grow quite as well.
It needs very little maintenance other than consistent moisture making it a spring favorite. A little fertilizer helps to stimulate growth especially if the soil is poor. They are readily available at florist shops but why not grow these hardy plants in your own garden. They do prefer full sun to light shade with soil that drains well.
There s also dream s end which is tall up to 3 feet and sports a lovely light orange flower with large yellow centers the black star with its deep purple red blooms and the glamini glads which i must get as they are supposed to be pest resistant and they will bloom well in full sun or partial shade. Plant gladiolus in a location that receives full sunlight. While you can plant in full sun to part shade it does best with more sun. One of my favorite flowers to add to a bouquet is a gladiolus.
Bleeding heart bleeding heart can be planted in spring through early summer. Gladioli will flower in partial shade locations but the blooms will not be as colorful or vibrant as they would be in full sun and the plant s growth could be stunted from inadequate light. While they prefer full sun gladiolus will still grow well in partial shade. The spiky plant has bright blooms in shades of orange pink yellow and white that are all stunning.
Add mulch to help retain water and to keep the weeds down. Gladiolus prefers a well drained loamy sandy soil. After loosening the soil mix in a 2 to 4 inch layer of compost or aged manure. Gladiolus also called gladiola or glads are commonly grown to be cut and used in flower arrangements.
These hardy bulbs are easy to grow and flower just about anywhere. They will not do well in heavy soggy soil. Once planted your gladiolus should grow well with little attention. Plant the corms bulbs three to four inches deep about six inches apart.
Soon after blooming the leaves die back while the bulbs go dormant during the warm summer. For the best flowers plant glads in full sun.
